One thing I noticed was how clear and low the floor tom sounded with its half worn heads-turns out it's a 15 x 13, which puts me out of the running for a prepack, but throws me into the proximity of what is apparently a golden touch of drum mechanics, placing it on a similar plinth as 20" kicks (which this kick is) and Ludalloy. Now, it was fairly fingerprinty and a bit dusty in parts, so I'm in the process of deheading and cleaning. Amid a couple of vintage pedals I might have gotten months ago (an older Yamaha lightweight strap for 20 and a Ludwig Ghost that needed TLC), I saw a trim little stack of four Sound Percussion drums for eighty bucks. I was eating lunch yesterday and got a wild hair to investigate the used gear on GCs site. I'm actually going through a similar scenario as we speak. Well $125 after heads and materials, but talk about bang for the buck ! Can anyone tell me definately what type wood these are ? No one would ever think I was playing a $70 set. I also have used the 13" as a down tom next to the 16". I actually had them out today and found I can mount them on my Rogers top part of the tom mounts. I just had that bass drum batter head laying around and used it, not trying to fool anyone. I just shook the water off and troweled them and they were fine. I have wiped them down several times with Old English lemon oil and once was caught outside in a squall and was soaked. I have used them on several outside gigs when the weather is iffy. These drums sound great ! And I have some other sets that are considered the best of the best, so I know what's what. I reversed the badges and had a metal plate made for the bass drum tom mount. I removed the wrap and refinished the shells with 4 applications of tung oil and the 4 coats of marine spar polyurethane. The wrap had bubbled but I realized these were some nice shells. I found a set on CL and gave $70 for them, the kid had beaten the heads senseless on the batter side but he had new Evans heads on the reso's I put on the batter and bought a set of Attack reso's for them.
